Baked Halloumi Fries Recipe

Similar to mozzarella sticks, this Middle Eastern comfort food is stuffed full of creamy cheese with a crispy baked coating. My version is completely gluten-free but still crispy and delicious! Serve these delicious halloumi fries up with the optional avocado dip, marinara sauce, or homemade ketchup. So yummy!

First things, I know so many of you are going to ask…

What is Halloumi Cheese?

Often called… “the cheese that grills” because of its high melting point.

Halloumi or haloumi is a semi-hard cheese made from a mixture of goat’s milk and sheep’s milk, and more recently, cow’s milk. It tastes somewhat between mozzarella and feta cheese. Tangy and salty, the texture will remind you of fresh mozzarella or Indian paneer cheese and will quickly become one of your favorite cheeses.

Ingredients for baked halloumi fries with avocado dipping sauce.

Ingredients for Halloumi Fries (and optional Avocado dip):

  • Almond flour. This recipe is gluten-free (the way I need it) however you can sub Panko breadcrumbs for the almond flour.
  • Eggs. Start with a single egg for the egg wash and add an additional, if needed.
  • Halloumi cheese. You usually find Halloumi cheese in your specialty cheese section or dairy section at your grocery store. Often it comes wrapped up inside of a brine.
  • Coconut flour. All-purpose flour works well if you don’t need a gluten-free recipe.
  • Smoked paprika. I get my smoked paprika online but if it is difficult for you to find go ahead and use traditional paprika and throw in 1/4 teaspoon of cumin or coriander seed.
  • Olive oil. To get a nice crispy texture I drizzle the sticks with a bit of oil to help them crisp up. If you use your Air Fryer be sure to spray the tray with cooking spray in between batches!

How to make Baked Halloumi Fries:

See recipe notes for Air Fryer instructions.

  • Preheat oven to 400F and prepare your baking sheet with olive oil or parchment paper.
  • Chop halloumi into thick slices.
  • Place the flour and smoked paprika in a small, shallow dish.
  • Beat one of the eggs (you may or may not need the second one; that’s why it is best to just start with one of them)and add ½ tsp of the salt.
  • Coat the halloumi sticks first in the coconut flour (or all-purpose flour), shake them to remove excess. Then dip them in the beaten egg. And lastly in almond flour (or panko crumbs) until it is well coated.
  • Place halloumi sticks in the prepared baking tray and drizzle 2 tbsp of olive oil on top of them(see recipe notes for how to make Air Fryer Halloumi Fries).
  • Bake them for 20-25 minutes until beautifully golden brown on top.

OPTIONAL AVOCADO DIPPING SAUCE:

  • To make the avocado mayonnaise, just mix all the ingredients and enjoy, best when fresh!

Tips for Crispy Halloumi Fries:

  • To get a nice crispy texture, don’t skip drizzling the sticks with a bit of oil to help them crisp up.
  • When the fries come out of the oven let them cool a bit and then transfer them to a paper towel to absorb any excess oil.
