Fold a paper envelope without a fancy envelope-folding tool! You can use a folding envelope to put a gift card or cash inside a birthday card or a thank-you card.
You can make a handmade envelope out of magazines, cardstock, paper, even the funnies! Create unique and personalized cards with matching envelopes with this easy tutorial. All you need to do is fold! Fantastic for little notes or handmade Christmas cards.
I wrote sweet little compliments on each paper for my little boy and used a few simple steps to fold an envelope out of the messages. I strung those sweet envelopes into a garland and hung it in his room on Valentine’s Day. Such a sweet way to tell him how special he is!
Create a personalized card and envelope for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, or anytime. These remind me of the little envelopes I created as a little girl full of messages to pass in school. Did you do the same thing?
Supplies to make an origami envelope:
- wrapping paper or cardstock cut into a square
- pair of scissors
- washi tape or little bit of glue
Instructions to make an origami envelope:
- Fold one corner to the next. Flip and do the same to the other side
- Take one corner and bring to meet the center of the paper.
- Fold the paper up and along the crease.
- Fold one side over (make it overlap the center)
- Fold the second side over overlapping the center as well.
- The bit that is overlapping from the side fold over (creating a triangle of it’s own)
- Press that little triangle that you just made into itself to create a diamond for the top to tuck into.
- Use washi tape, a little bit of glue, or even a cute sticker to keep the envelope closed, if you like.
Great job!! You have folded an envelope for your little messages!
Try making an origami envelope out of:
- card stock
- old magazines
- daily funnies
- word searches
- mazes
- felt
- fabric
- wrapping paper
- simple printer paper
- coupons
- clean brown paper from your recycling bin :)
I have family that is sooo great at sending legit paper notes and cards. I’m terrible. I have mad respect for those of you that still use this traditional way of communication. Keep it up!! I appreciate it and always wish I did a better job of it. You inspire me!
Origami Envelope garland:
- Write messages on each paper (you need 14 in all).
- Fold into an envelope.
- String up. (you may need to use washi tape or little bit of glue to attach the string to the inside of the envelope so it won’t slide down the string)
I love to use these little envelopes to create gift tags for Christmas gifts. I create little envelopes & tuck a name into the envelope and use double-sided tape to attach the envelope to the gift. Super cute!

Thanks, Lisa! Try them!
These look so cute! Thank you for sharing this gorgeous little envelope ‘How To’
I’m definitely going to try my hand at this project for Valentines Day. – Wishing you a good one :)
Dee, that song is by Rixton (one of my faves!) they are covering Taylor Swift’s Trouble. Great catch! And great song!
I am so sorry. This is so entirely irrelevant (even though I LOVE these envelopes and am currently trying my hand at one this very second) But I was so captivated by the song playing at the end of that video I just have to ask. Do you happen to know who sings it? I just spent the last 10 minutes trying to find it. I’d appreciate it! Thank You. :)
Yay!!! So glad to hear it. Of course you can.
I didn’t think 83 year old women could do this but I did. Thank you.
Yes, I just start out with a square, although a rectangle (if it isn’t too narrow) works as well. All dimensions will work just fine. You are welcome!
I was looking for the paper dimensions. Am I missing it somewhere? It looks like a perfect square to start right?
I love this idea! Thanks for sharing with us!
Good point. hmmm…animated or stopped. If you like, I can try to help. I might try video next time so it can be paused.
I was just thinking about you guys!! Thank you, by the way.
You are so thoughtful, Janel! No wonder your boy is such a sweetheart! Blessings to you an d your family~
Aargh, I am stuck at step 7 and the pictures won’t stop cycling so that I can see the step I am struggling with. Not sure I am loving the moving photo method without being able to get it to just stop so I can see the picture for a little longer.
