CrockPot Mulled Wine – truly the easiest recipe!

Making spiced, mulled wine in a CrockPot is the easiest method you’ll find. We love having this for holidays, family gatherings, and cool evenings. It’s easy to make and easier to drink!

You’ll only need to add a bottle of wine, a bit of brandy, and some warm spices to your CrockPot and let it warm up while your guests or family mingles. Customize it to your personal preferences and favorite ingredients!

If you are looking for warm and festive cocktails try our Cranberry Whiskey Sour or Whiskey Pom Cocktail …both are perfect!

Key Mulled Wine Ingredients:

  • Full-bodied Fruity Red wine. You’ll want a red wine with a lot of body and flavor. We recommend a Malbec.
  • Brandy. You can’t have an authentic, Midwest mulled wine without a bit of brandy.
  • Fresh Orange. Orange is an essential flavor for traditional mulled wine.
  • Mulling Spices. Traditional mulled wine uses spices like cinnamon, clove, and allspice.

How to Make Mulled Wine:

  • Combine the wine, spices, and brandy in a slow cooker. It’s best if you can put the spices in a cheesecloth or tea bag, otherwise, you can scoop them out later.
  • Cut the orange in half. Add the juice of one half, cut the remaining half into slices, and add to the slow cooker.
  • Cook in slow cooker on low until warm. This is different timing depending on the size of your slow cooker. Small CrockPots might need an hour and large CrockPots might need only 30 minutes. Watch carefully.
  • Add sugar to taste (some wines are sweeter than others, we added 2 tbsp).
  • Turn the CrockPot to the warm setting and remove the cover, if needed, to be sure it doesn’t boil.
  • Remove spices and oranges. Or, scoop some wine out as you drink it and let the remaining wine get even more spiced 🙂

Can wine be used in slow cooker

Of course. Slow cookers, on low, don’t reach a temperature that will burn off the alcohol. Make sure it doesn’t boil, of course. But a CrockPot is a great resource for making mulled wine!

How do you keep mulled wine warm at a party?

Using the CrockPot to make your mulled wine means that keeping it warm is easy…serve it from the CrockPot and you can keep it warm in the same CrockPot.

What is the best wine to make mulled wine?

We like to use fruity, full-bodied red wine for our mulled wine. I prefer sweeter wines like Malbec and Merlot. But we will use Zinfandel or Cabernet if that is what I have on hand.

How do you reduce the bitterness in mulled wine?

Orange peels can be bitter if cooked too long. If you would like to be able to leave the orange slices in the CrockPot for longer amounts of time peel them first to remove the rind and… the bitterness. Also, be sure that you don’t let the mulled wine boil or you’ll find it becomes bitter.

“I use the spices I have on hand and don’t always use allspice and it is still delicious. And it smells so good!”
