The perfect cake recipe for any occasion! Rich, moist, and tender! Among our recipe testers, this marble bundt cake recipe is a favorite because it’s so easy to make and looks elegant.
My recipe has been perfected and tested countless times to ensure perfect swirls of sweet chocolate and tender vanilla cake studded with mini chocolate chips that looks fancy but is easy to prepare. It is an old-fashioned, classic favorite that deserves a place on today’s dessert table.
How do you do the marble cake effect?
Check out the video in the recipe card for a video tutorial. You’ll also find photos and instructions later on in this post. Or check out How To Marble A Cake for even more instructions on how to get the marbled cake effect than what you’ll find in this post.
I’m sort of about keeping chocolate cakes and white cakes true and honest in their flavors and not doing this business of mixing and muddling them together.
This bundt cake recipe, however, uses my favorite old-fashioned butter cake recipe as the foundation. Then I split that in half and turn one half into a rich, chocolate batter and the other half into a chocolate chip butter cake.
This kind of mixing I can get on board with.
Key Marble Cake Ingredients:
- Bob’s Red Mill All-Purpose Flour. Use good quality flour to achieve a super yummy cake.
💡Tip: Bob’s Red Mill Gluten-Free 1 for 1 Baking Flour works great for creating a gluten-free cake. - Mini Chocolate Chips. The key to this chocolate chip goodness is to use mini chocolate chips. Otherwise, you will end up with even MORE muddling with those large melted chocolate bits.
- Sour Cream. Sour cream is a favorite ingredient in old-fashioned cake recipes because it adds moisture, rising help, and flavor to the batter. Substitute yogurt instead of sour cream: 1 cup of yogurt and 1 teaspoon of baking soda equals 1 cup of sour cream in this recipe.
- Cocoa. Easily turns your vanilla batter into chocolate. Use good quality cocoa.
- 4 eggs. I use a lot of eggs to create that tender, moist cake.
How to Make Chocolate Chip Marble Bundt Cake:
- In small bowl mix flour, baking powder, and salt together. Set aside.
- In a mixing bowl cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in eggs, one at a time.
- Add vanilla and sour cream, and gently beat just until combined.
- Alternate mixing the flour and milk into the batter.
- Divide the batter in half.
- Add cocoa to one-half of the batter. Stir until incorporated.
- Add the mini chocolate chips to the other half of the batter (plain). Stir until incorporated.
How to Marble A Cake:
- Drop your batter by the spoonful into your pan, alternating flavors. This cake is a thick batter, don’t even worry about it!
- Take a knife and run it through your cake only going across one way. And only a few runs. Do NOT be tempted to do more or your cake will get muddy and stuff.
- Clean your knife off and go back again the other way. Again, only a few strokes!
Nobody likes muddy cake.
Why is it called marble cake?
The marbling effect achieved by blending (very very gently!) light and dark cake batter are why marble cake has its name. A marble cake can be made up of any dark and light-colored cake, not just chocolate and vanilla.
What does marble cake taste like?
Marble cake tastes like whatever the two flavors are being used to create the marble effect. In this recipe, chocolate, and vanilla. Try mixing flavors like strawberry and chocolate, banana and coconut, or lime and lemon. But be careful with your flavor mixing!
Should marble cake be refrigerated?
Most cakes are left unrefrigerated for a couple of days. I recommend storing this recipe in an airtight container on the counter. However, if you use another website’s cake recipe that requires refrigeration, be sure to follow that website’s instructions for storage.
Glorious, non-muddy marbled cake!
Think about doing this with a strawberry and vanilla flavor combo, pistachio and almond, or whatever you can dream up. So fun!
You could drizzle some melted chocolate or a simple white icing. However, I think this chocolate chip marble bundt cake is the best plain, with a cup of coffee.
This is a simple, homemade marble bundt cake that your family will love and you will love to make!
Chocolate Chip Marble Bundt Cake
Equipment
Ingredients
- 3 cups All-purpose Flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup butter softened, unsalted
- 2 cups sugar
- 4 eggs at room temp
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 cup sour cream room temp
- 2 tablespoons cocoa (for chocolate batter)
- 1 cup mini chocolate chips
Instructions
- In small bowl mix flour, baking powder, and salt together. Set aside.
- In mixing bowl cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in eggs, one at a time.
- Add vanilla and sour cream, gently beat just until combined.
- Beat in a small amount of the flour mixture followed by a small amount of milk. Repeat until all the flour and milk is added.
- Just beat until mixed.
To create the separate batters
- Divide the batter in half.
- Add cocoa to one half of the batter. Stir until incorporated.
- Add mini chocolate chips to the other half of the batter (plain). Stir until incorporated.
How to Marble:
- In a greased and floured bundt pan drop batter by the spoonful, alternating chocolate and vanilla flavors. Use only 1/3 of the batter for the first layer. (this batter is thick, don't worry about that…it will work out in the oven!)
- Drop spoonfuls again but this time alternate the flavors. So, chocolate is now on top of a spoonful of vanilla, and vanilla is on top of a chocolate.
- Drag a butter knife through the cake going across the width of the cake, and back again. Do not be tempted to “over swirl” or you’ll get a muddy looking cake. Wipe the knife off when you get to the end.
- Now, swirl the cake down the length of the pan, again do not over-do it.
- BAKE the cake in a 350 degree oven for about 50-60 minutes (check at 40 minutes — overbaking will dry this cake out) or until a knife inserted comes out clean.

Recipe Tester Amy says…
Love the Flavor Combination of the two cakes in one. I actually added food coloring to the different batters to make it more fun. Let my kids put frosting on top and sprinkles. Big hit with my kids.
